The Trailer Where We Grew Up

Genre: Literary fiction
Status: In progress
Themes: Friendship, first love, faith, shame, queer identity, memory, and the rural South

The Trailer Where We Grew Up follows Mark, a teenage boy in rural Mississippi in the early 1990s. An abandoned trailer at the edge of town once felt like the center of his friendship with Brent. Now Mark is older, that friendship has shifted, and he is starting to understand parts of himself he has spent years trying not to face.

The trailer is one of the few places Mark can breathe. It holds memories of summers with Brent, but it also gives him room to think about who he is becoming now. The place has not changed much. Mark has.

This is a novel about growing up in a town that has already decided who you are supposed to be. Mark is starting to realize he may not be able to become that person, no matter how hard he tries.

Current Focus

I’m working through the first draft right now. The story is still taking shape, and Mark is coming alive on the page. I’m trying to get inside his head and draw out his story.
