A lot of times we like to hold onto things. At least I do. I used to be pretty bad about it. I’d save things, that really had no use. They just held sentimental value. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. It’s okay to have things to remember people by. It’s okay to stay connected to the past, but we can’t live in it.
Sometimes though, we hold onto things so tightly that we can’t move ahead into the future. People move back to the place of their youth, thinking that things will be like they were “back in the day”. They aren’t and they never will be. A lot of people try too hard to recapture things that are gone and when they can’t do it they live in disappointment. Worse yet, some of them live in regret and become bitter.
That’s when it crosses the line into toxic. Remember, it’s okay to hold onto memories and things that help us to remember, but God never intended for us live IN the past. He wants us to move on into the future. Live. It’s okay. When you’re too busy trying to recapture the nostalgia of the past, you end up isolating yourself. Step out of the shadow of the past. We can’t change it, but we change now. Forgive yourself for the past mistakes. Ask God to forgive you too and move on.
If you’re in a place now where there is no happiness and you’re looking to the past to find it again. Realize that it’s not there. It was there then and it’s okay to remember it. Start making changes in your life so you can be happy where you are now. One of the best ways to do that is give everything over to God and allow him to change things.
I’ll sign off with this. God fully intends for you to live today. We’re not promised tomorrow and yesterday is in the past. Live today. Forgive the past. You’ll find joy in doing so.
